Pick the size by your dog's weight. For almost every dog, that is all you need. No tape, no measuring.
| Your dog's weight | Size |
|---|---|
| Up to 10 lbs | S |
| 11 to 20 lbs | M |
| 21 to 40 lbs | L |
| 41 to 55 lbs | XL |
| 56 to 90 lbs | 2XL |
Things to consider
Age and muscle loss
Older dogs often lose muscle in the back legs, so their hips get slimmer than their weight suggests. If your dog sits at the bottom of a weight range and the back legs have thinned out, take the smaller size.
Build
Stocky or deep-chested, and right on the line between two sizes? Take the larger size.

Over 90 lbs, or want to double-check?
The weight chart above is ours, built from the maker's waist sizes. The maker sizes by the waist, just in front of the back legs, and the top of a back leg:
| Size | Waist | Back leg (up to) |
|---|---|---|
| S | 11 to 13 in (28 to 33 cm) | 6.3 in (16 cm) |
| M | 13.8 to 15.7 in (35 to 40 cm) | 7.9 in (20 cm) |
| L | 17.7 to 21.3 in (45 to 54 cm) | 10.6 in (27 cm) |
| XL | 19.7 to 23.6 in (50 to 60 cm) | 11.8 in (30 cm) |
| 2XL | 25.6 to 30.3 in (65 to 77 cm) | 16.5 in (42 cm) |
Over 90 lbs, check the waist first: above 30.3 in, even the 2XL will be too small.
